The Clinic Records recently put together an initial set of interview questions for Casey The Intern that defied convention, challenged tradition, and more or less delved into some pretty deviant topics for the better part of a dozen pages. What follows are the questions and answers that received begrudging publication approval after cursory review from our humorless attorney.
The Clinic Records fan base wants to know more about you, what can you tell them?
I hope they know what they’re getting into. I don’t even want to know some things about me. That’s why I put them online. That way other people can know those things for me. [Note: Casey's on Twitter @InsincerelyUrs]
What is your favorite type of music?
Old shit. Power Ballads. Old punk rock like Suicidal Tendencies and the Circle Jerks. Styx. Queen. Pat Benatar and Debbie Harry, The Go-Go’s. But then I love the extremely gay shit, as well. Barbra Streisand, Cher, Madonna, Dolly Parton, Stevie Nicks, Lady Gaga… I could go on. But I’ll stop. I also have a few random obsessions with people you’ve probably never heard of, like Suzy Bogguss, Maria McKee and Julie Christiansen. Maria McKee and Julie Christiansen sing kind of Folk-y weird stuff, and Suzy Bogguss is pretty country, but not po-dunk. Because quite frankly I’d rather shoot myself than hear about how your daddy shot himself and how your mother had to carry his gray lifeless body sixty miles through the sleet and snow to the funeral parlor.
What are your top two favorite recording artists of all time?
Oh Jesus. Barbra and Cher, probably. No one else can make me cry as easily as they do. I’m really embarrassed to admit how gay I am. But Barbra’s albums taught me to sing, so I credit her with any existing talent I possess, and Cher—I credit for my fabulousness. I impersonated her in my fourth grade talent show. I’ve been walking with a limp wrist and hair flipping ever since.
What was your favorite concert/live event experience?
I met the Go-Go’s when I was like, 10. I remember Jane Wiedlin wearing five-inch heels and feeling incredibly proud that I was still taller than her. I also remember meeting Wynonna Judd as a child, I brought her flowers and pushed through the crowd to give them to her. She was wearing a leopard coat that had black feathers on it, with black bell-bottomed pants. She had fire engine red hair and rhinestones glittering at the corners of her false lashes. Naturally, I had my aunt Karen make that exact outfit for me, and I was Wynonna Judd for Halloween – the best costume in all of the 3rd grade. Also, I just recently saw Cher in concert and burst into uncontrollable tears when she began singing “Walking in Memphis.” I dried my mascara stained face with my Cher Barbie’s hair.
Do you have any favorite indie or college bands that you’re currently listening?
No, what am I, a hipster?
How long have you been writing/blogging and do you have a following?
I’ve been writing my whole life. I actually had blogs and websites back when I was younger, but my mother always found out about them and made me take them down. I avoided Internet life for a while and stuck strictly to notebooks. There are stacks and stacks of composition books piled in my bedroom corner, from about 6th grade on. I began writing most often in high school, I think, once I realized how funny I was. My first entry as Insincerely Yours, however, was posted in March of 2010.
Surprisingly, I do have a following. The other day I checked my stats and there were people on the other side of the world reading about how fucked up I am. Like, why would anyone in Zimbabwe care whether I got off last night?
What are some of the other online projects/blogs you’re working on?
Right now I write only for Insincerely Yours and for Mint Magazine, which is this online magazine from the UK. They’re pretty cool. Most of their articles and art are pretty random, so I fit in quite well there.
What can The Clinic Records’ fans expect from your Casey The Intern blog in terms of topics, content, etc?
I’ll try to moderate my language and discussion, because this is a family site, not a site about making families. I blame Daniel for the questions he chose — he conned me into writing about those things, and I’m but a poor innocent little intern. [Note: Our attorney cut out most of “those things” to which Casey refers. No interns were harmed in the conducting of this interview.]
